In 1987, the change of law no. 4 changed the Institute of Education to the Institute of Curriculum Development without changing its basic role. This was due to the institution engaging in the work of designing and developing curricula for various levels of education. The institution was renamed as the Tanzania Education Institute (TIE) by Parliament Act No. 5 of the year 1993. This change was due to the previous name of the Institute for Curriculum Development not reflecting the broader responsibility of the institution. In July 2009, TIE was given the status of being a non-university institution of higher education that provides training managed by the Tanzania Technical Education Authority - NACTE with the responsibility of providing training in the field of Innovation and Curriculum Development.
